At least thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
